The information and program qualifications related to the Molecular Biology and Genetics Bachelor of Science Program, under the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Faculty of Science and Letters, are summarized below.
Information About The Program
Molecular Biology and Genetics Department, one of the research active departments of our University, aims to understand the fundamental principles of life in molecular level and to translate this knowledge in various applications in medical, agricultural, food, environmental and industrial fields by collaboration with other disciplines.
Our students have opportunity to get experience not only in basic research areas like bacterial, yeast and human genetics, molecular immunology, protein structure and function, neurobiology and molecular modelling, but also in applicative and interdisciplinary fields such as biomaterials, bionanotechnology, biotechnological drugs, enzyme biotechnology and protein engineering. Along with fundamental natural sciences, students take field based courses like microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, molecular genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology, immunology, etc. and benefit from the infrastructure of ITU Dr. Orhan Ocalgiray Molecular Biology-Biotechnology and Genetics Research Centre (MOBGAM).
While some of our graduates choose to pursue academic career, others work in different fields, mostly related with medical and pharmaceutical field, such as clinical studies for new drugs, biotechnological drug development, genetic labs, biotechnology companies and IVF centres.

Program Profile
The aim of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program is to educate qualified individuals who can understand the fundamental principles of life at the molecular level, possess strong scientific thinking and research skills, adopt interdisciplinary approaches, and apply the knowledge they acquire to various application areas. The program aims to contribute to scientific advancement at national and international levels in the field of molecular biology and genetics by training research-oriented and innovative graduates with a strong foundation in basic sciences.
Within the scope of the program, students receive both theoretical and practical education in core areas such as molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, and immunology, enabling them to learn the fundamental concepts of life sciences. In addition, students gain knowledge and research experience in fundamental scientific fields such as bacterial and yeast genetics, human genetics, molecular immunology, protein structure and dynamics, neurobiology, and molecular modeling.
The program also aims to equip students with competencies in interdisciplinary research areas. In this context, project-based studies are carried out in areas such as biomaterials, bionanotechnology, biotechnological drugs, enzyme biotechnology, and protein engineering, and students are encouraged to actively participate in scientific research processes. In this way, students’ analytical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative solution development skills are supported.
One of the important objectives of the program is to ensure that students gain experimental research experience by using modern research infrastructures. In this regard, students have the opportunity to perform molecular analyses, biotechnological applications, and bioinformatics studies by benefiting from advanced laboratory facilities. Through a research-oriented educational approach, students develop both academic and applied research skills.
Graduates of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program may pursue academic careers or find employment opportunities in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, genetic diagnostic and analysis laboratories, clinical research, and assisted reproductive technology centers. The program aims to educate graduates who can contribute to scientific knowledge production, adhere to ethical values, possess social and environmental responsibility, and adapt to developments in the life sciences.

Program Learning Environments
The learning process in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program is supported by modern classrooms where theoretical courses are delivered, laboratories where practical training is conducted, and a research center. Within the scope of the program, students take core science courses as well as field-specific courses such as microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology, and immunology, both theoretically and practically.
Throughout their education, students gain research skills by conducting experimental studies in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and genetics laboratories. In addition, students have the opportunity to carry out project-based studies in interdisciplinary research areas such as biomaterials, bionanotechnology, biotechnological drugs, enzyme biotechnology, and protein engineering.
One of the important learning environments of the program is the İTÜ Dr. Orhan Öcalgiray Molecular Biology - Biotechnology and Genetics Research Center, which provides students with advanced research infrastructure and modern instrumentation. In this center, students gain research experience by conducting molecular analyses, biotechnological applications, and bioinformatics studies.
In addition, students access scientific knowledge through computer laboratories, digital learning environments equipped with bioinformatics and molecular modeling software, as well as the university’s library and electronic databases. Thanks to these multifaceted learning environments, students are trained to acquire both fundamental scientific knowledge and interdisciplinary research skills.
