Earthquake Engineering Master of Science Program

The information and program qualifications related to the Earthquake Engineering Master of Science Program, under the Department of Earthquake Engineering of the Graduate School, are summarized below.

Information About The Program

Earthquake Engineering can be defined as the engineering field related to minimizing the earthquake damages. In this general content, earthquake engineering includes investigating destructive earthquakes as well as problems caused by such earthquakes. In this program, modern information related to earthquake engineering is introduced with an aim to train qualified engineers who would use such information for the good of mankind. Earthquake engineering topics are aimed to be delivered to civil engineering graduates based on theoretical contents with appropriate applications. This program aims to train engineers who are able to complete planning, design, analysis, and application of earthquake-resistant buildings, structures, and systems with consideration of national and international applications.

Program Educational Objectives

In alignment with the program’s mission, five educational objectives have been established to train earthquake engineers who possess sufficient professional competence, are committed to continuous improvement and lifelong learning, and meet the qualifications required by the modern era. These objectives, along with the mission statement, have been determined by taking into account the feedback received during the meetings of the Program Academic Committee and the External Advisory Board, as well as considering developments at the regional, national, and global levels.

Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 58 - Courses in graduate programs shall be evaluated according to the following grading system.
Grade Description Grade Scale
Excellent AA 4.00
Very good plus BA+ 3.75
Very good BA 3.50
Good plus BB+ 3.25
Good BB 3.00
Conditional Pass CB+ 2.75
Conditional Pass CB 2.50
Conditional Pass CC+ 2.25
Conditional Pass CC 2.00
Fail FF 0.00
Fail(No Exam) VF 0.00

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.

Internship

There is no internship in this program.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the Master's with Thesis program in Earthquake Engineering, a student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00, and must successfully complete the seminar course and the thesis work. Students who complete their coursework, seminar course, and thesis work successfully, and have a CGPA of at least 3.00, may graduate in a shorter period. Students who fail to complete the program within the maximum period are required to retake, in addition to the compulsory 24 credits, any failed or conditionally passed courses, regardless of whether they are in the coursework or thesis stage. The thesis advisor and thesis topic of such students are changed upon the recommendation of the relevant department of the institute and the decision of the institute’s administrative board. Students may continue their thesis work provided that they retake the failed or conditionally passed courses and achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in these courses. In case of failure, the same process is repeated. During their graduate studies, students must complete 24 course credits, with at least 50% from compulsory courses and at least 30% from courses taught in English. In addition, taking at least one mathematics course is mandatory.

Program Employment Opportunities

Students who attend Earthquake Engineering Master of Science program would specialize on advanced engineering knowledge and applications on seismic behavior of structure/soil systems. Lectures given within this program include design and construction of earthquake resistant structures, performance-based design, seismic safety and retrofit of existing structures, earthquake risk assessment, earthquake scenario analyses, effects of soil dynamics and geotechnical microzonation, strong ground motion prediction models, seismic isolation methods, and conservation of historical structures, considering the most recent knowledge and technics. Students in the program would be able to analyze structural and socioeconomic damage due to earthquakes, to deliver solutions for minimizing the damage risk, and to participate in advanced research projects conducted in ITU about this context. Students who successfully complete the program would be able to solve advanced seismic problems encountered in important superstructure and infrastructure projects with the know-how and experience that they gained in this program. Also, our institute aim to have students who want to continue their careers as an academician/researcher to become experts who can make effective contributions to their field.
