Program Learning Environments

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering learning environment combines specialized laboratories, simulation and ship design tools, and strong industry connections to prepare students for the design, construction, and maintenance of marine vessels and offshore structures.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering programs are offered within the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, in a modern academic building with approximately 15,065 m² of enclosed space. These programs provide undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students with a multilayered, research-oriented, and technology-supported learning ecosystem. The Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering occupies a significant portion of the faculty building and offers a rich physical infrastructure that supports the development of students’ scientific, technical, and professional competencies.

Courses in the department are delivered in fourteen classrooms located within the faculty building, with a total seating capacity of 955 students, ten of which accommodate 50 students or more. All classrooms are equipped with projectors and computers suitable for visual presentations, modern ventilation systems, and ergonomic layouts that support group work and applied learning activities. These teaching spaces are used not only for undergraduate courses but also for advanced computational, design-oriented, and seminar-based courses at the graduate level.

The department hosts five specialized research and instructional laboratories accessible to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students:

Laboratory Name: Principal Investigator:
Ata Nutku Ship Model Basin Prof. Dr. D. Bülent DANIŞMAN
Ship Emission Laboratory Prof. Dr. Selma ERGİN
Computational Ship Hydrodynamics Laboratory Prof. Dr. Uğur Oral Ünal
Ship Vibration and Acoustics Laboratory Dr. Öğr. Üyesi M. Erden Yıldızdağ
Prof. Mesut SAVCI Ship Strength Laboratory Doç. Dr. G. Tansel Tayyar

These laboratories support fundamental applied training at the undergraduate level and serve as advanced research environments where independent research projects and thesis studies are carried out at the graduate level. Students have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of experimental and numerical studies, including hydrodynamics, emissions, structural analysis, acoustics, and vibration.

In addition, the department operates three computer laboratories equipped with a total of 76 up-to-date computers accessible to all students. These laboratories provide the computational capacity needed for both coursework and research activities. All computers are equipped with advanced engineering software, including ANSYS, MATLAB, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Maxsurf, NUPAS Cadmatic, Powermill, office software, and the Windows 11 operating system. These facilities support undergraduate coursework in design and analysis, and they also enable master’s and doctoral students to perform CFD, FEA, optimization, data processing, and other advanced computational studies.

Students enrolled in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering programs benefit from a broad digital learning infrastructure that includes online course materials, institutional software licenses, remote-access computing resources, and various digital academic tools. This infrastructure allows students to continue their learning and research activities effectively both on campus and remotely, contributing to the continuity and depth of their academic experience.
