Information About The Program

Musicology Department is the second department on the Turkish education of musicology, was established in 1985 at ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory. However, %100 English program on musicology has been worked in 2011 for integration with the other musicology department in abroad.
The visions of the programs assume the pioneering position in science and technology of our university, and conveys cultural wealth of our country and the world to new generations, and evaluate the musicology among with the other disciplines in this age.
The mission of the programs to train bachelor and graduate level of musicology by means of tree main titles; “Historical Musicology”, “Systematic Musicology” and “Folklore and Ethnomusicology” parallel with the scientific development of the world academies, and raising creative and pioneer musicologist in changed and globalized life.

Program Profile

The objective of the Musicology Undergraduate Program at the Turkish Music State Conservatory of Istanbul Technical University is to educate qualified graduates who are able to examine music from historical, theoretical, cultural, and analytical perspectives, employ scientific research methods in the field of musicology, and evaluate the knowledge they produce in accordance with academic and ethical principles.
The program aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and research skills in areas such as music history, music theory, ethnomusicology, and music analysis. It also seeks to enable students to evaluate musical cultures through an interdisciplinary perspective and to conduct scholarly studies based on written, oral, and audio sources.
Within this framework, the program aims to prepare graduates who possess the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to work in areas such as music research, cultural institutions, archives and libraries, as well as in academic environments.

Program Learning Environments

The learning process in the Musicology Undergraduate Program is carried out within diverse academic environments where theoretical courses, practice-oriented studies, and research-based activities are integrated.
Educational activities in the program are conducted through lectures, seminars, student presentations, music analysis studies, source examinations, and research projects. In addition, students gain research-oriented learning experiences by utilizing library and archive collections, musical score and manuscript sources, digital databases, and audio materials.
Learning environments are further supported by concerts, academic events, symposia, and interdisciplinary activities, encouraging students to examine musical cultures in different contexts and to engage with current research and practices in the field.

Program Educational Objectives

To provide knowledge of Turkish Music Studies, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, organology, systematic musicology as a foundation for life learning and research and musical practice, abilities to conceptualize analyzing and criticizing music using present.


Measurement and Evaluation
