Information About The Program

There are Master's (MSc) and Doctorate (PhD) programs affiliated to the Department of Industrial Design within ITU Institute of Graduate Studies.

The MSc program has been continuing since 1989.

The Industrial Design Master's Program focuses on design research. Thesis/research topics at master's level include: design methods and processes, design research methods, design theory/history and criticism, user-centered design, interaction design, design policies, design management, design strategies, culture in design context, social responsibility, sustainability, creativity, entrepreneurship, semantics, semiotics, innovation, design pedagogy, etc.

ITU Graduate programs are supported by strong ERASMUS and local industry connections. Students enrolled in the Industrial Design Master's Program have the opportunity to study at least one semester in 12 design schools from 6 different European countries.

The philosophy of the Master's program is based on a dynamic design research culture that aims to search for new knowledge and methods in design in a universal sense, is open to local and global actors, developments and influences, and is constantly renewing itself.

Program Educational Objectives

To create and gain disciplinary and interdisciplinary academic competencies in order to produce new knowledge and develop scientific methods in the field of design.

To contribute to the formation of academic research culture and tradition in the field of industrial design and education in Turkey.

To develop a dynamic design research culture that is open to local and global actors, developments, and influences, and that can constantly renew itself.


Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 58 - Courses in graduate programs shall be evaluated according to the following grading system.

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.

Graduation Requirements

As stated in the Istanbul Technical University Postgraduate Education Senate principles; For graduation with a master's degree, the weighted grade point average must be at least 3.00, and the seminar course and thesis must be successfully completed.

ITU graduate programs in industrial design constitute a research and education platform that is the biggest in terms of its student population and also the most versatile in terms of the backgrounds of the students. Many designers and engineers working in the leading industrial companies of Turkey and young academics from different public or private universities who are also graduates of various universities and disciplines in Turkey and abroad are registered to the ITU MSc and Ph.D. programs in Industrial Design.
